On January 9, 2002, Dick and Eva Breadner went to Honduras for 14 weeks to work at El Hogar de Amor y Esperanza in the capital city Tegucigalpa. This is a home for 'street boys' ages 6 to 13 years operated through the Tegucigalpa Deanery of the Episcopal Church. (El Hogar Projects also operates a farm school and St. Mary's Technical Institute for older boys.) The following photos were taken during that trip.

The Administration Building
A new building for washrooms was being constructed and with 83 young boys around, someone was bound to play in the sand for the concrete.

The school year in Honduras begins in February. Each year some boys graduate to the farm school or Technical Institute. These are some of the boys that came came to live at El Hogar beginning in Jan. 2002
The hearts of the staff went out to these two boys. From the clothing donations in the bodega, (store room), we found these clothes to fit the boys, they got haircuts and baths. One of the teachers took them home while their mother went into the Hospital to have her baby. | ![]() |

Grades 1 through 6 are taught in the on site school. As in most Latin American countries, 'School Uniforms' are mandatory. The El Hogar boys wear white shirts and blue jeans. Morning assembly is at 8 am where devotions and the day's announcements are given. Several teachers take part while Executive Director, Rev'd Barry Wyckham looks on.
Classes are not large and even in grade one the boys have 2 or 3 teachers on different days. The teachers also take turns supervising at night in the 4 dormitories. | ![]() |
